First things first, mask adventures. Immediately after class today I decided to go on a hunt for the perfect covid Christmas mask and one may say I was successful.
Secondly, inquiry fun! After a couple hours of scholarly article hunting and a very helpful chat with Susan I think I finally narrowed down the scope of my inquiry project. I am inquiring about the ways in which secondary math educators reflect social and emotional learning strategies in their curriculum.
I have lots of ideas to connect to the world of teaching & learning in the next couple weeks. In addition to connecting with teachers at my local high school, and my practicum school, I aim to connect with the education world in the following ways:
1) UBC Geering Up: This is the STEM outreach organization that I work for that aims to bring STEM to students K-12 across BC through workshops, camps, clubs, and more. We have spent over 20 years delivering STEM through hands-on activities and develop our lessons in a unique way. Connecting with my co-workers and past staff to get a better understanding of the ways in which we create our unique curriculum (that is all connected to the BC curriculum) will really help me creatively think of possible solutions to my inquiry question.
2) Social Media (Instagram, Twitter, Blogs, LinkedIn): Nowadays, so many educators are connecting through instagram, twitter, LinkedIn, and blogs. I want to do some digging to find secondary math educators who are using, or have used, SEL strategies in their classrooms and would be able to discuss and reflect upon what they have tried. In particular, I'll be looking for educators who reflect SEL strategies in their math curricula (lesson plans).
3) Professor at UBC (Shelley Hymel): As a researcher at UBC, who has done research on SEL, I am hoping to connect with her to inquire about what she has (if at all) come across in terms of social and emotional learning in the secondary school context.
