Inquiry Project Reflections
Inquiry project thoughts... I have a few...
The Process: I'm not a big research & reading person, and so the part of this project I was not looking forward to was the literature review. Although this was the hardest part for me, I did find that reading and reviewing topics that you genuinely have an interest in makes reading much easier. The part of the process that I loved the most was connecting with other math teachers through instagram. I love social media and find that connecting with other educators, as well as my following audience as a whole is a fantastic way to gain insight.
The Learning: I think that everything I read, and everything I heard through interactions, came as no surprise to me. I think what I learned most from this project was the following: We have the tools. We have the knowledge. We know exactly how to help our students. However, the question then becomes, why are we not helping them? How come we put into the BC Curriculum the "Core Competencies", and yet, on average, students are still struggling. Is it teacher training? Class sizes? Lack of support? Poor hiring and admission standards for teachers? Parents? ...
To be honest, my inquiry project didn't answer this. My inquiry project did what I wanted it to, which was to explore strategies for incorporating social & emotional learning in a mathematics classroom. So, where do I want to carry on with in my Inquiry 2 project? I think I want to explore why teachers are not using social emotional learning in their mathematics classrooms? Why is this not a priority? Another question I have, is are the core competencies enough to address social emotional learning? Are the core competencies effective?
