1. Name: Sarah Reny
2. Teaching Specialties: Math & Computer Science
3. Highlights of your teaching practicum experience:
a. Experiences I remember with a smile: Having my students visit me at lunch once their quarter was over always put a smile on my face. The other teacher candidate in my school and I had a wonderful relationship and that was an experience I will always remember. The moments when I did an activity or a lesson and my students were SO into it and so engaged :) THE BEST!
b. Challenges: Self-care and balance for sure... The biggest challenge I struggled with was trying to figure out how to find balance in the classroom. Achieving a space that was mutually beneficial in that I am at my best and so are my students. Hopefully I get to explore this more in my inquiry 3 project!
c. Ongoing learning: SO MUCH LEARNING, EVERYTHING! One thing I am excited to explore in September is the role social media can play in the classroom and how we can use it positively.
4. What is the most important thing I would write in a letter to my future teacher self? I think the most important thing I would write in a letter to my future teacher self is to remember to continue to challenge yourself! With everything we do in life I have always felt that you get what you give and I think sometimes it's important to remind ourselves of this. Ideally in 5 years I will be settling into a routine, however, I want to encourage myself to continue challenging myself, continue learning, and continue trying new things! All while practicing some good self care :-)
5. Post-BEd plans: I am so excited to have been hired into the Surrey School district as a TOC! My plan is to spend the first few months TOC'ing and getting to know different schools in the district before settling down into a school. In addition to TOC'ing, I will be continuing my work with the STEM outreach organization that I have been working with for the past few years. Through this work I will be continuing to develop and grow our professional development program with the goal and mission to provide teachers with skills they need in order to bring more STEM, particularly coding and computational thinking, in their classrooms!
Wonderful! Your passion for learning, and for making connections with the school community, shines through. And, yup - the challenge of finding work-life balance is real :) .. especially when we're passionate about our work. Congrats on securing a job, and great that your working with a STEM outreach org .. There's loads of fun to be had in this work!
